Abstract

This study focused on exploring the self-perception of poverty among citizens in the municipality of San Salvador who participated in the Quality-of-Life Survey of El Salvador Cómo Vamos during the years 2019 and 2021. Only qualitative responses regarding why people consider themselves poor were used. To analyze the data, analysis categories were implemented, and four key areas were identified: economic challenges, means of survival, perceptions, and socio-economic reality. The results indicate that the self-perception of poverty is primarily associated with insufficient resources to cover basic needs, lack of stable employment, and low incomes. The majority of households expressed a lack of homeownership, living in precarious conditions, and facing difficulties in covering housing expenses. In addition, a lack of access to essential services and conditions for a dignified life are also mentioned.
